Carrara

While driving along the western side of Italy I was thankful for our car
Rob and I had a hard time deciding if a car rental was a good idea
Lots of opinions were gathered before the trip and we decided on picking up a car as we left Rome
What a joy to have a car as we zipped around Tuscany's small villages
As we left Lucca we made a small detour, one that would have made my Dad proud if he had been there
Our Norwegian friends suggested a stop at Carrara, there was a 1/2 page write up about it in our Rick Steve's book.  We went on a whim

Perhaps the world's most famous marble quarries are just east of La Spezia in Carrara.  Michelangelo himself traveled to these valleys to pick out the marble that he would work into his masterpieces.

Our slow approach

The rocks that dwarfed our car
The pictures hardly do justice

After driving our car through one of the man-made tunnels Rob and I both looked at each other and said, "this is awesome!"  So worth the 1 hour detour
